Does Heel Elevation Affect Y-balance Test Performance in Healthy Individuals?
<ns3:p>Introduction: The Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ) is widely used to assess postural stability limits. Interestingly, it is not well understood how the ability to lift the heel off the ground during the test tasks affects outcomes. Objective: This cross-sectional study is aimed at examining whether and how the YBT-LQ procedure allowing heel lift (FHL) compares to the procedure restricting heel lift (RHL) in influencing test outcomes among healthy individuals. Methods: The two versions of YBT-LQ were performed: FHL and RHL.Results: Allowing heel lift during the test significantly increases reach in the ANT and PL directions (stance leg), as well as composite score. Both procedures demonstrate excellent repeatability of test repetitions. A statistically significant weak to moderate negative linear correlation was observed between DF ROM and the difference (FHL vs. RHL) in reach distances in the ANT and PL directions and composite score in the stance leg. Conclusion: When using the YBT-LQ as a diagnostic or research tool, or when interpreting its results, it is important to remember that the test outcomes are significantly affected by whether the subject is allowed to lift his/her heel off the ground during the test tasks.</ns3:p>
