Theoretical Study on High-Pressure Behaviors of the He–Al2O3 System
It is highly probable that there are primitive reservoirs of helium in the lower mantle of the Earth, and the existence of such reservoirs has drawn significant research interest. In this paper, we show that helium and Al2O3 can form metastable compounds under pressure. Two phases with R3c and R3 space groups are predicted. The reduction of the volume provides the driving force for helium insertion. This work extends the reactivity of helium into new types of compounds and reveals the existence forms of He and Al2O3 in the Earth.
