Detection of failure in materials under tensile testing using Acoustic Emission Technique

Acoustic Emission (AE) technology is a powerful non-destructive evaluation (NDE) tool for real-time monitoring and early failure detection in engineering materials. This study explores the use of AE techniques to identify and analyse failure mechanisms in metals and polymers—specifically PTFE and Polyurethane—commonly employed in automotive and structural applications. Metals, known for their strength and ductility, and polymers, valued for their lightweight and flexible properties, exhibit distinct AE signatures under mechanical stress. The research involves tensile testing of various metal and polymer samples, with AE signals recorded throughout loading. Signal features such as amplitude, frequency, energy, and RMS values are correlated with specific failure events, enabling detailed characterization of material damage. Spectrogram analysis and statistical interpretation of AE data reveal critical differences in failure behaviour: metals show high-energy bursts during fracture, while polymers exhibit lower-energy patterns associated with micro-void formation and fiber-matrix debonding in composites. The technique’s sensitivity and capacity for damage localization make it especially useful for in-service structural health monitoring. This baseline study underscores AE’s potential in failure prediction, particularly through time series analysis of AE data, enhancing safety and reliability in critical systems. Moreover, insights from this work have informed predictive modelling in complex, multi-material structures. Overall, the study highlights AE as a versatile diagnostic tool that contributes significantly to the development of safer and more reliable engineering systems.
