Insulin Plant (Costus igneus) Tea as an Alternative Hypoglycemic Medication

The research investigates the potential of Costus igneus, commonly known as the insulin plant, as an alternative hypoglycemic medication. The study employs a developmental research design to evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of Costus igneus tea in managing hyperglycemia. The methodology includes five phases: gathering of Costus igneus leaves, preparation of Costus igneus leaves, packaging of dried Costus igneus leaves, production of Costus igneus tea, and sensory evaluation. To assess the acceptability of Costus igneus tea as a convenient alternative for commercial hypoglycemic medication, the researchers specifically conducted a 9-point Hedonic Rating Scale and Descriptive Rating Test with fifteen (15) evaluators consisting of TLE teachers, science teachers, and parents. The findings indicate that the visual presentation and sensory attributes of the tea significantly influence consumer acceptability, suggesting that the appearance of the product plays a crucial role in its marketability. The results demonstrate that Costus igneus tea is not only a viable alternative for individuals with hyperglycemia but also possesses favorable sensory qualities that enhance its appeal. The study highlights the importance of traditional herbal remedies in contemporary health practices and encourages further exploration of Costus igneus as a natural hypoglycemic agent. Overall, this research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of herbal teas in diabetes management, emphasizing the need for more accessible and natural treatment options.
