National-Ideological Views of Ahmet Ağaoğlu in the Newspaper "Hikmet"

The main goal of the newspaper "Hikmet", published in Istanbul at the beginning of the 20th century, was to contribute to the "revival of Islam" by defending human rights and freedoms, to achieve unity in the Ottoman and Islamic world, to expand the enlightenment movement, and to achieve religious unity. This was the theme of the articles of one of the main authors of the newspaper, Ahmed Ağaoğlu. In his world of thought and thought, in his works and articles, it is possible to see the concept of Islamist and Turkist among the intellectual movements such as Islamism, Turkism, and Westernism that formed in the Ottoman state after the Second Constitutional Monarchy. The formation of this unity, commitment to national-spiritual values, and loyalty to historical roots formed the basis of his creativity. Ağaoğlu firmly stated that the main and only element that builds the state and forms its foundation is the nation. The people have been considered the only source of power, and therefore, the people must have all the rights and opportunities to change the government. He called on the Turkish nation to achieve these rights by showing determination and will, and to establish a society and a national government governed by democratic principles. Ağaoğlu believed that the salvation of society lay in uniting around the ideas of "Turkish unity" and "Unity of Islam", and he mainly promoted the idea of national unity in his newspaper.
