Performance evaluation of PV array configurations under various partial shading conditions

Abstract Solar power is highly sensitive to environmental factors. The shading problem of some photovoltaic (PV) modules may lead to a series of negative effects such as power reduction and hot spots. The PV array configuration is crucial for maximizing power output. By scientifically and rationally adjusting the configurations of the PV system, their efficiency can be significantly improved. In this paper, Matlab/Simulink software is employed to conduct accurate modeling of a 6×6 PV array. This study investigated various performance indicators of six configurations, namely Series (S), Series-Parallel (SP), Honey-Comb (HC), Bridge-Linked (BL), Triple-Tied (TT), and Total-Cross-Tied (TCT), under various partial shading conditions (PSCs). The involved indicators include the global maximum power point (GMPP), shading loss, mismatch loss, fill factor, and efficiency. By comprehensively analyzing the average performance under various PSCs, the advantages and disadvantages of different PV array configurations can be revealed more objectively and accurately. Consequently, the findings of this research offer a reliable reference for the optimized design of PV systems.
