Fault location method for flexible DC transmission lines based on current derivative values

Abstract Flexible DC transmission boasts the advantages of flexible power flow and strong transmission capacity. Rapid and sensitive fault location technology is extremely important for the safe and stable operation of DC systems. This paper proposes a fault location method within the zone of flexible DC transmission lines based on current derivative values. The method utilizes the substitution theorem to equate the flexible DC transmission system during a fault to a discharge circuit and derives the fault location equation based on the equivalent circuit. A flexible DC transmission system model is built on the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation platform to verify the reliable location of the proposed scheme.
