Where has the Aptian Source Rock Gon(dwana): A Journey from Brazil (Pelotas) to Mozambique (Angoche)

Summary Recent drilling has emphasised the importance of Aptian aged units in the Austal and deepwater Outeniqua basin as regional oil prone source rocks. This paper focus on an integration of plate tectonic and climatic reconstructions, DSBP and industry well penetrations and seismic examples to examine the distribution and character of the Aptian source rock facies from present day Pelotas Basin (West) to Angoche Basin (East) via Outeniqua Basin. To understand the factors behind the source rock distribution and variation and to examine how extensive this system might be. The intention is to show the positive evidence for liquid hydrocarbons associated with this source south of the Walvis Ridge. To examine how understanding of this petroleum system has changed over the last 15 years and what was required to drive this change. The top-down observations to drive the extension of this system from well and seismic data will be integrated with bottoms-up models to explain the controls on the distribution of the source rock facies to risk the oil and gas potential regionally.
