Variations in Magma Budget, Extensional Rate, and Style along the Deep-Water Conjugate Moroccan-Scotian Margins
Summary This work identifies domains characterized by extensive Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) volcanics and seaward dipping reflectors (SDR) indicative of high magma budgets that alternate along strike with exhumed mantle and hyperextended continental crust domains typical of low magma budgets. We have also mapped where these domains gave way to submarine seafloor spreading and the creation of Penrose oceanic crust, as well as the subsequent transition to oceanic core complex development. These processes have played a first-order genetic control on the distribution of accommodation in time and space and provide significant insights into the kinematic and early post-kinematic tectonostratigraphic evolution of the margins.
