Robust Multifunctional Terpolymers with Attach-Detach-On-Demand Adhesion at Tunable Triggering Temperatures and Its Applications

Electronic skin, one of the human wearable electronics, has attracted wide attention because of its conformity and safety on the skin surface. In practical applications, the ability of attach-detach-on-demand is as important as strong adhesion for an adhesive or electronic skins. Herein, robust multifunctional terpolymers (PNSTs) were synthesized by random copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) with octadecyl acrylate (SA) and tetradecyl acrylate (TA). The component NVP will provide PNSTs with excellent mechanical properties (fracture strength of 1.67 MPa at 483% elongation). Components SA and TA with long alkyl side chains will endow the PNSTs with attach-detach-on-demand adhesion in a temperature window ranging from 11.5 to 48.2 °C, which includes skin temperature. It loses adhesion without leaving residue at lower temperatures due to its phase transition from amorphous to crystalline of the long alkyl side chains in PNSTs, and this attach-detach triggering temperature can be tuned by the ratios between SA and TA. At the same time, terpolymer PNSTs exhibited the shape memory property due to the cross-linked network and the switch between crystallization and melting of the long alkyl side chains. Finally, a bilayer patch was fabricated from one-source PNSTs with the electrical conducting filler Ag@C sponge in the conductive layer (having a conductivity of 13.0 S/m). This patch was applied as an adhesive strain sensor that displayed stable monitoring signals for various human motions. This work might enrich the preparation strategies for robust and on-demand attach-detach adhesives, one-source programmable polymer multilayers with tunable adhesive-triggering temperatures, and flexible sensors in wearable human wearable electronics.
