Income optimization of a biodiesel, glycerin and soap company using waste cooking oil

Objective: Optimize a biodiesel, glycerin and soap production unit using a mathematical programming model (MPM). Determine the optimal quantities of waste cooking oil from different products (ACD1 = glycerin and biodiesel, and ACD2 = soap) to optimize the income of a biodiesel producing company. Design/methodology/approach: To determine the availability of ACD inputs, a stratified sampling was carried out during the period from February 8 to 19, 2021, measuring the ACD generation of the restaurants in the center of the municipality of Texcoco, State of Mexico. The analysis was carried out under the economic approach to the production of a biofuel producing company, taking into consideration 10 decision variables in the objective function (FO), subject to 18 restrictions. The variables were based on the technical requirements to produce 1 L of biodiesel and 1 bar of soap of 400 g, using technical coefficients (input-product). Excel® Solver® was used to obtain a sensitivity report and analyze shadow prices (PS) and reduced costs (CR). Results: More than $140,000 MNX per month was obtained, ACD2 is the most scarce and valuable input for the model. Limitations on study/implications: Proper management of the final disposal of ACD allows generating income by producing biodiesel, glycerin and soaps. Findings/conclusions: MPM is the most efficient way to use kitchen waste and transform it into products.
