Cuaderno No. 1 Puerto Rico: Imagination and Possibilities, 2024

Abstract The images included here are part of Cuaderno No. 1 Puerto Rico: Imagination and Possibilities, a publication exploring the creation of new speculative illustrations that introduce counter-narratives of Puerto Rican identity and history. To create these images, we used traditional cuadernos de láminas, printed pamphlets with illustrative representations of specific topics, used as a supplement material in Puerto Rico's school system. During the project evolution, the traditional pamphlets were combined with new illustrations, Montessori's Cosmic Education principles, and speculative design frameworks, to generate new images in the form of collages. Each image is accompanied by a short description and prompt for the reader to encourage inhibited imagination of new futures. Cuaderno No. 1 is part of Images for Decolonial Futures, an ongoing collaborative project creating new imaginaries-based alternate worlds, realities, and histories for and about Puerto Rico and its diaspora. The project aims to re-imagine and re-interpret past and present symbols from the archipelago as an invitation to envision futures created by us and for us.
