Radical Possibilities of/for Art Education
Abstract Education in the United States has long held a role in the indoctrination and assimilation of young individuals to prepare them for a life of labor in a capitalist, White Supremacist society. For educators, meeting every student's needs becomes complex when we consider the breadth of student's backgrounds, lived experiences, and home cultures. Facing the inequities in the existing structures of education, schools must change to meet students’ needs. This radical re-imagination of education shifts the focus from profit-oriented goals to ones that prioritize the needs of the individual students. My radical imagination situates the school as a center for support, self-actualization, and service. I imagine schools where students graduate ready to live life to the fullest, in community with others.
