Parallel Processes, Field Forces, and Reversed Roles in Gestalt Supervision
ABSTRACT The focus of this article is the practice of Gestalt therapy supervision, with a view toward how the author’s personal style of working with individuals, groups, and teams of supervisees has developed over decades of private practice. During the course of her professional life, the author has benefited from incorporating the concepts of parallel process and reversed roles into her supervisory work. The development of one’s own personal style and willingness to experiment as a psychotherapist and supervisor has been a further guiding principle for a fulfilling practice. The article lays a brief theoretical foundation by describing several basic concepts that foster professional growth. A case vignette of Gestalt group supervision is provided. The significance of continuous supervision for professional growth and effectiveness is highlighted.
