Enhanced Radiation Characteristics of Plano-Concave-Shaped Series-Fed Antenna based on Metamaterials for 5G Application

Firstly, a novel model of a plano-concave (pc) shaped antenna (A#1) is implemented on the Duriod material of thickness 1.6 mm that operates at 28.01 GHz. Later 1x2 series-fed pc-shaped antenna with a superstrate circular metamaterial (MTM) segments (A#3), that increase the peak gain, and efficiency suggested for Ka-band operation is presented. A#3 with a substrate dimensions of 5.6λo x 9.2λo mm2 (or) 60 x 98 mm2 is designed. The permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ) characteristic of a single-segment circular MTM is extracted. By employing a superstrate of duriod material of thickness 0.8 mm above the pc-shaped series-fed antenna (A#2) with 15 x 7 circular MTM elements the peak gain maximized from 8.61 dBi to 30.70 dBi is obtained at 28.01 GHz for 5G application. An evaluation of the prototype model are consistent with the simulated results of the suggested model.
