Joining of aluminum tube to PVC pipes through electromagnetic force

Abstract. This study investigates the joining of Al to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes using electromagnetic force, focusing on the role of discharge energy and residual stress in optimizing the bond quality. The method addresses challenges faced in traditional joining techniques, offering a promising alternative by using electromagnetic fields to induce localized heating and pressure. Results demonstrated that medium and high discharge energies, ranging from 13.5 kV to 14.5 kV, produced smooth, gap-free interfaces with enhanced mechanical bonding. Existence of residual compressive stresses at the interface contributed to improved bond strength and durability. The findings emphasize the importance of discharge energy and residual stress in achieving high-quality metal-to-polymer joints, highlighting key parameters for optimizing electromagnetic welding processes.
