The Impact of Engine Oil and Windshield Washer Fluid Exposure on the Structure and Properties of Injection-Molded Nucleated Polylactide-Basalt Composites

Abstract Designing polymer composites for demanding applications, including the automotive industry, requires validating the working environmental impact of various factors limiting their potential use. This study investigated the effect of two technical vehicle fluids, winter windshield washer fluid (WWF) and semisynthetic engine oil (O), on the polylactide (PLA) matrix and its' composite containing basalt powder (BP) for production hybrid composites in bioXpul™ technology. Samples of unmodified and nucleated with a potassium salt of 3,5-bis(methoxycarbonyl) (LAK-301) PLA and composites containing 20 wt% of BP were subjected to a one-month immersion in WWF and O. Changes in the structure of materials verified by thermal and spectroscopic evaluations were correlated with mechanical properties. After exposure to vehicle technical fluids, PLA samples containing additives (BP and LAK-301) exhibited improved crystallinity. The favorable changes in impact strength (up to 42% increase) without deterioration of static mechanical performance after 30 days of oil immersion of PLA and its composites were reported.
