ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES IN THE HOTEL BUSINESS: UKRAINE’S EXPERIENCE AND FUTURE STEPS

The hotel business in Ukraine holds substantial potential as a driver of economic growth, regional attractiveness, and job creation. Beyond these benefits, it facilitates international connections, cultural exchange, and interregional mobility. However, the industry also poses significant environmental challenges. Globally, the hospitality sector contributes approximately 1% of carbon emissions, necessitating drastic reductions to align with global climate targets. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring sustainable development while enhancing the sector’s competitiveness. This study examines the current state of environmental initiatives in Ukraine’s hotel business and provides recommendations for adopting eco-friendly practices based on international standards and local considerations. Over the past decade, the influx of international hotel chains, including Rixos, Hyatt, and Radisson Blu, has improved service quality and introduced sustainability measures. Ukraine has pioneered eco-certification among post-Soviet states, harmonizing ISO 14000 standards and joining the Global Ecolabelling Network. These certifications enable hotels to adopt environmentally friendly practices, including waste reduction, energy and water conservation, and the use of certified organic products. Prominent examples include the Green Key certification, achieved by several Ukrainian hotels, and initiatives by hotel chains, which have eliminated single-use plastics and implemented resource-saving measures. These efforts illustrate the growing integration of environmental sustainability in hotel operations. Furthermore, the development of eco-tourism and investments in green technology present significant opportunities for the sector. Recommendations for further improvement include optimizing energy and water use, expanding waste management systems, and reducing carbon footprints through renewable energy and efficient operations. The article highlights the potential for Ukraine’s hotel industry to lead in sustainable development, leveraging its natural resources and unique landscapes to attract eco-conscious tourists while contributing to global environmental goals.
