Extreme temperature fiber Bragg grating sensors for superconducting magnet and spacecraft applications

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are increasingly applied to extreme environments from cryogenic temperatures for superconducting magnets including superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities to the extreme cold and heat of space. Sensitivity and survivability can be enhanced with appropriate coatings. Results are provided for probes with enhanced sensitivity and ruggedization.

Abstract

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are increasingly applied to extreme environments from cryogenic temperatures for superconducting magnets including superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities to the extreme cold and heat of space. Sensitivity and survivability can be enhanced with appropriate coatings. Results are provided for probes with enhanced sensitivity and ruggedization.
