Polyurethane soft pressure sensors based on different conductive polymer functionalization

Abstract Integrated soft pressure sensors are at the forefront of innovation in Internet of Things applications; this research engages in this field both with innovation and with a prototype. We explored five groundbreaking types of porous polyurethane functionalized with PEDOT:PSS conductive polymer solution with 0%, 2%, or 4% ethylene glycol. This unique approach allowed us to investigate how these modifications affect both the materials and their sensor capabilities. Through advanced scanning electron microscopy analysis and compressive testing, we uncovered some remarkable findings. The addition of ethylene glycol significantly reduces the compressive modulus of the polyurethane foams, directly influencing their conductivity under pressure. These novel functionalized materials emerge as highly effective resistive pressure sensors, demonstrating a clear relationship between conductivity and compression, particularly for up to 2% ethylene glycol. Each polyurethane variant also boasts its own distinct pressure response range, paving the way for customized solutions. Building on these groundbreaking insights, we have developed a prototype smart mattress device that promises to transform applications in medical monitoring, rehabilitation, and sports performance. This innovative technology could redefine how we track health and enhance athletic training, marking a significant leap forward in sensor technology.
