English Learning Activities in the Merdeka Curriculum for 7th Grade Students at SMP Negeri 3 Tanjung Palas
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the Merdeka Curriculum was implemented to teach English for seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Tanjung Palas. A descriptive qualitative research methodology was employed, and data were gathered through document analysis, observation, and interviews. Twenty-four students from seventh-grade and the English teacher participated in this study. The findings revealed both potentials and challenges in the curriculum’s implementation. Among the potentials, the Merdeka Curriculum encouraged teacher flexibility in managing instructional time and tailoring learning activities to meet students’ needs. Teachers demonstrated the ability to adapt to the new curriculum by emphasizing student engagement and actively promoting classroom participation. They also showed concern for students' behavior and study habits by consistently enforcing rules and motivating students to be involved in discussions, which contributed positively to the learning environment. However, several challenges were also identified. Time constraints and a lack of clear communication regarding learning objectives presented obstacles that could hinder students' comprehension and progress. These issues highlight the need for better structural support and clearer curriculum guidelines to ensure smoother implementation and consistent learning outcomes. Overall, the study concluded that despite initial difficulties, the introduction of the Merdeka Curriculum in Grade 7A English classes enhanced both student learning and teachers’ adaptability to educational reforms.
