Optimized Smart Wearable Device for Man Overboard Detection and Identification System in Marine

Maritime safety is a persistent problem, particularly for ferry, yacht, and commercial ship crew. Man Overboard (MOB) detection generally relies on human vision and thus has a relatively slower response. This paper introduces a new IoT-based wearable system that is responsible for real-time MOB condition monitoring and instant alerting of others. The system employs an array of sensors: MAX30102 for monitoring heart rate and SpO2 level, MPU6050 for detecting movement and falls, and a pH sensor for detecting water submersion. When hazardous levels are detected, the NEO-6M GPS module activates to get the exact location and sends an emergency message through a Wi-Fi module to pre-programmed responders or onboard systems. This solution optimizes response time, reducing the risk of missed MOB events and improving survival chances. The device is versatile for use across maritime industries, including logistics, passenger transport, naval operations, and recreational boating.
