Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of dapsone alone or associated with topical corticosteroids for pemphigus foliaceus: a retrospective multicentre study

This retrospective series is the largest one to date, with the longest follow-up, to study the efficacy and safety of dapsone in patients with pemphigus foliaceus (PF). The results of this study indicate that dapsone’s long-term efficacy for PF is modest, whether used alone or in combination with topical corticosteroids, even for mild cases, and is associated with a high rate of adverse events. Dapsone may still be appropriate for patients with mild PF who have contraindications to immunosuppressive therapies; in other situations, alternative systemic therapies, particularly rituximab, should be considered.

Abstract

This retrospective series is the largest one to date, with the longest follow-up, to study the efficacy and safety of dapsone in patients with pemphigus foliaceus (PF). The results of this study indicate that dapsone’s long-term efficacy for PF is modest, whether used alone or in combination with topical corticosteroids, even for mild cases, and is associated with a high rate of adverse events. Dapsone may still be appropriate for patients with mild PF who have contraindications to immunosuppressive therapies; in other situations, alternative systemic therapies, particularly rituximab, should be considered.
