ASSESSING THE SUFFICIENCY AND QUALITY OF FARM-TO-MARKET ROADS IN THE FARMING VILLAGE OF BANGAO, BUGUIAS, BENGUET
The study aimed to evaluate the sufficiency and quality of farm-to-market roads in the Bangao, Buguias, Benguet, focusing on their role in supporting agricultural productivity and community well-being. Specifically, it assessed the level of sufficiency of the farm-to-market roads, determined the severity of damages to their physical conditions, and identified the benefits of sufficient and well-maintained roads to end-users. By addressing these objectives, the study aimed to provide actionable insights for improving the farm-to-market road infrastructure in the area. The study employed quantitative and qualitative research designs, utilizing descriptive surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions to gather data from 230 full-time farmers, transporters, and residents of the area. The study used a structured questionnaire with Likert-scale indicators to measure perceptions of road sufficiency, physical damage severity, and benefits. Data were analyzed using weighted means, supported by qualitative feedback from respondents to contextualize the findings. The results revealed that the farm-to-market roads measure of quality was rated as slightly sufficient, with key issues including the absence of two-way lanes, inadequate drainage systems, and insufficient slope protection and barriers. The physical condition of the roads was classified as moderately damaged, with deficiencies observed in drainage systems, pavement quality, and slope protection. The benefits of sufficient and well-maintained farm-to-market roads include opportunities for tourism, improved safety, easier access to emergency services, shorter time travel, and reduced spoilage of agricultural products. In conclusion, despite the absence of some road safety measures, and the deteriorating quality of the farm-to-market roads in Bangao, Buguias, Benguet, these roads still serve the community’s transportation needs but significant improvements are needed to enhance their sufficiency and condition. Addressing these gaps will maximize the socio-economic benefits of the roads, supporting sustainable agricultural practices and improving the quality of life in the community.
