IMPACT OF THE NUMBER OF BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS ON A SINGLE OCCASION ON THE CLASSIFICATION AND CONTROL OF HYPERTENSION IN 16,294 INDIVIDUALS: MAY MEASUREMENT MONTH IN GREECE
Objective: The May Measurement Month (MMM) campaign was conducted in Greece in 2019, 2022, and 2023. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of the number of blood pressure (BP) measurements of a single occasion on the classification of hypertension and control assessment in the general population of the country. Design and method: Adult volunteers were recruited through opportunistic screening in public areas in Greece. Information on medical history and triplicate sitting BP measurements were obtained using validated automated upper-arm cuff devices with appropriate cuff size. For BP evaluation, the 1st BP measurement and the averages of the 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd measurements of a single occasion were used. Hypertension was defined as systolic BP >=140 mmHg and/or diastolic >=90 mmHg, or self-reported use of drugs for hypertension. The threshold <130/80 mmHg was used for the definition of controlled hypertension in treated individuals. Results: Data from 16,294 participants (5,215/6,315/5,394 for MMM 2019/2022/2023) were analyzed, including information on sex, age, BP, and antihypertensive treatment (mean±SD age 53.6±16.6 years, 47.2% male, BMI 26.9±5.0 kg/m2, 27.8% smokers, 11.5% diabetics, 4.5% myocardial infarction, 2.4% stroke, 29.8% treated for hypertension, systolic/diastolic BP 124±17/77±10 mmHg). Among untreated participants, the prevalence of hypertension was 25.0%/20.8%/16.9% using the 1st measurement, the average of 1st-2nd, and 2nd-3rd measurements, respectively (p<0.001) (Figure). Among treated hypertensives, the rate of controlled hypertension was 26.9%/31.2%/35.4% using the 1st measurement, the average of 1st-2nd, and 2nd-3rd measurements, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of adhering to guideline recommendations and perform triplicate BP measurements and calculate the average of the last two.
