SCOPING REVIEW OF ONGOING CLINICAL TRIALS ON OLMESARTAN: COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF EFFICACY, SAFETY, AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL IN HYPERTENSION AND COMORBID CONDITIONS
Objective: Olmesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, has demonstrated efficacy in hypertension management and shows potential benefits for cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic health. This scoping review aims to analyze ongoing clinical trials of olmesartan, focusing on study designs, participant demographics, primary outcomes, and geographical distribution to provide a global perspective on its therapeutic applications Design and method: We reviewed 33 clinical trials registered across multiple international platforms, examining recruitment status, target population sizes, intervention models, and primary outcomes. Trials were categorized by phase, primary purpose, and geographical location, with statistical analysis to compare differences between retrospective and prospective study designs Results: Of the 33 trials, 57.6% (19 trials) were prospective, while 42.4% (14 trials) were retrospective. The majority were interventional, with 72.7% (24 trials) in Phase III or IV. Participant sample sizes ranged widely, with large-scale trials (more than 200 participants) comprising 30.3% (10 trials), allowing extensive data collection on olmesartan’s therapeutic effects. Primary outcomes emphasized blood pressure reduction (60.6% of trials), renal protection (18.2%), and metabolic impacts, especially in hypertensive populations with comorbid diabetes (39.4%) and chronic kidney disease (18.2%). Geographically, 45.5% of trials were concentrated in Asia, especially in Japan and China, reflecting a regional research emphasis on hypertension and cardio-renal health Conclusions: This scoping review highlights a comprehensive, multifaceted approach in olmesartan research, with a strong emphasis on blood pressure control, metabolic benefits, and renal protection in complex patient populations. The balanced mix of retrospective and prospective studies, along with high enrollment numbers in many trials, highlights the global and multi-institutional focus in olmesartan’s expanded indications. These findings highlight olmesartan’s potential in personalized medicine and combination therapy approaches for hypertension management
