SERUM LIPID BIOMARKERS AND PULSE WAVE ANALYSIS IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS
Objective: To assess the relationship between lipid biomarkers and pulse wave variables in hypertensive patients Design and method: A total of 66 hypertensive patients, aged 64±10 years, 55% males, underwent pulse wave analysis using an oscillometric device. Several lipid serum biomarkers were measured, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and non-HDL cholesterol (nonHDL). Lipid balance index (LBI) was calculated considering TG, LDL, HDL values, and lipid-lowering drugs. Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), TC, TG, nonHDL, and LBI were, as follows: 135±19 mmHg, 85±11 mmHg, 196.91±51.87 mg/dl, 191.23±213.58 mg/dl, 147.12±51.62 mg/dl, and 0.58±1.94, respectively. Early vascular aging (EVA) was detected in 16 patients (24%). Significant correlations were reported between SBP and LBI (r=0.28, p=0.025), DBP and TC (r=0.25, p=0.042), and nonHDL (r=0.27, p=0.026) and EVA and LBI (rK= 0.201, p=0.017) and TG (rk= 0.171, p=0.044), respectively. Multiple regression analysis revealed that only TC remained significantly associated with DBP (coefficient of determination=0.062, p=0.0423). Conclusions: Total cholesterol, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol and lipid balance index provide information about systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and early vascular aging in hypertensive patients. Total cholesterol is independently associated with diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients.
