LEGACY OF STATINS IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Objective: Statins are the cornerstone of lipid management, reducing LDL-C and cardiovascular events. Statins revolutionized cardiovascular disease (CVD) management by reducing LDL-C and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). This review examines their enduring impact in CVD prevention and explores their legacy and evolving role in therapy. Design and method: Key clinical trials (e.g., JUPITER, PROVE-IT, REDUCE-IT, SATURNO and VOYAGER), meta-analyses, and guidelines provide insights into their efficacy, safety, and integration with adjunctive therapies. Form the basis of evaluating statins’ effectiveness and limitations. Results: Comparative analysis of LDL-C reduction, CVD outcomes like myocardial infarctation, stroke, and integration with adjunct therapies addressing residual risk. Statins remain foundational in CVD prevention, reducing risk by 35%, with combination therapies enhancing outcomes Conclusions: Their legacy endures as foundational therapy, complemented by new agents addressing unmet needs. Early introduction of statins in a sustainable manner in primary prevention drastically reduces the chance of MACE.
