INTERPLAY BETWEEN BLOOD PRESSURE PARAMETERS WITH BODY COMPOSITION AND OXIDATIVE STRESS PARAMETERS IN DALMATIAN DIABETIC PATIENTS

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze association between blood pressure parameters and nutritional (body mass composition parameters and anthropometric parameters) and oxidative stress parameters (advanced glycation end products (AGEs) measured by skin autofluorescence in Dalmatian diabetic patients. Design and method: This cross sectional study was conducted at University Hospital Split during a public call for diabetes mellitus type 2 patients and 252 participants were included. For each participant blood pressure was measured using the Omron M7 blood pressure monitor, body mass composition was assessed by Tanita MC 780, and, AGE was measured from skin of the forearm using the AGE Reader Mu device. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured and body mass index (BMI) and waist to height ratio (WHR) weight were calculated. Clinically relevant anamnestic data was assessed. Results: A total of 252 diabetic patients aged 67 years, 122 (48.4%) male with average systolic blood pressure (SBP) 138 (125 - 152) mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 81 (75-88) mmHg were included in this study. Positive predictors of SBP were WHR (ß=27.3, p=0.004), metabolic age (ß=0.58, p<0.001) and bone mass (ß=10.27, p<0.001) while negative ones were BMI (ß= -0.96, p=0.008) and extracellular water (ECW) (ß=-0.06, p<0.001). Positive predictors of DBP were trunk muscle mass (ß=6.22, p=0.005) and AGE (ß=2.73, p=0.002), while negative ones were trunk fat free mass (ß= -0.96, p=0.008), presence of chronic kidney disease (ß=-5.24, p=0.04) and duration of diabetes treatment (ß=-0.18, p=0.003). Conclusions: In diabetic patients from Dalmatia, blood pressure parameters are associated with body composition parameters and AGE together with clinical parameters, highlighting the complex interactions that may lead to personalized treatment options.
