A magneto-optical fibre rotary sensor for robotics

A novel magneto-optical rotary optical fibre sensor is demonstrated. It is used to remotely characterise a simple rotary robotic arm with an angular resolution Δθ ~ 1°, determined by the accuracy of the arm rotation. The sensor itself can undertake continuous 360° rotation and reached a measured angular resolution Δθ < 0.5° when tested at rotary rates between ν = 136 °/s and ν = 369 °/s.

Abstract

A novel magneto-optical rotary optical fibre sensor is demonstrated. It is used to remotely characterise a simple rotary robotic arm with an angular resolution Δθ ~ 1°, determined by the accuracy of the arm rotation. The sensor itself can undertake continuous 360° rotation and reached a measured angular resolution Δθ < 0.5° when tested at rotary rates between ν = 136 °/s and ν = 369 °/s.
