Embedding fiber-optic sensors in DED-LB processes for structural monitoring
The development of Fiber Bragg Grating-type fiber optic sensors designed to monitor a novel High Entropy Super Alloys (HESA) coating material, intended to protect a roller component from high temperatures inside a melting furnace, is detailed. This paper outlines the manufacturing process of these Fiber Bragg Grating sensors, coating, thermal characterization, embedding on new HESA material procedure for embedding these sensors into the metallic structure by Direct Energy Deposition Laser-based technique, based on laser cladding and on micro-cladding, and their validation over the first three weeks of operation in the steel mill furnace.
