Evaluation of two different types of zirconia crowns used in carious primary anterior teeth: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract Background Esthetics of the primary teeth has been a major challenge for pediatric dentists and the demand for beautiful smiles is growing among children as much as adult. And zirconia crown has created abroach for restoring natural appearance of child’s teeth. Aim This study was performed to assess the clinical and radiographic evaluation of Kinder Krowns and NuSmile crowns in restoring carious primary canines. Patients and methods This in-vivo study was performed on 25 children presented with 50 primary canines need to full coverage restorations. Carious teeth were assigned to two equal groups: group I restored by Kinder Krown, while group II restored by NuSmile. Teeth were treated were followed up for clinical evaluation at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months and for radiographic evaluation at 6 and 12 months. Randomization was performed. Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Shapiro–Wilk tests, and χ 2 test used for statistical analysis. Probability level which is significant at P value less than or equal to 0.05. The presented research was registered retrospectively at ClinicalTrials.gov in 16/11/2021 with an ID number: NCT05121584. Results Both zirconia crowns used showed no statistical significant difference regarding crown retention, opposing tooth wear, immediate color match, child/parent satisfaction, gingival index, crown margin, pathological external/internal root resorption, and periapical radiolucency at the 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months follow-up period. And no statistically significant difference was found in comparison between the two crowns used. Conclusions Based on our results, we conclude that both zirconia crowns can be used as an effective full-coverage restoration for the primary canines, retentive, had minimal opposing tooth wear, gingivally compatible, and accepted by parents and their children.
