Assisting the Effective Design of an SBBO-Like Vanadium-Iodate Crystal with Mixed Metal Cations

The first alkali and alkali-earth vanadium-iodate crystal, K2Mg2(V2O7)(IO3)2, was designed by modifying the Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO) template structure at the molecular level and synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The novel sandwich 2D [Mg2(V2O7)(IO3)2]∞ layers built from [V2O7] and [IO3] groups are connected to the [MgO6] group through the shared oxygen atom and separated by K+ cations. K2Mg2(V2O7)(IO3)2 displays a UV cutoff edge of 320 nm and a significant birefringence of 0.17 at 1064 nm. Additionally, it remains stable at temperatures up to 603.05 °C, which is higher than that of all currently reported vanadium-iodate compounds. Moreover, their optical properties are mainly influenced by the (V2O7)4– and (IO3)− groups.
