Quality of contact: a qualitative study on experiences of Gestalt online and blended psychotherapy

Abstract This qualitative research, positioned from a phenomenological critical realist conceptual framework, sought to explore client and therapist’s lived experiences of online Gestalt therapy with a focus on the experienced contact. Eight in-depth interviews and three focus groups were conducted with a total of 26 participants. The former was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and the latter, Thematic Analysis. The following themes were elicited: the sudden transition due to the pandemic; contrasting experiences and preferences; challenges met; enabling factors; a lifeline during crisis; loss of preparation; the online therapeutic space; the screen-between; the body during the online encounter; experiences of full contact; reduced ending; useful tips and suggestions. Results not only present a good picture of participants’ nuanced experiences, but also contribute to Gestalt therapy by pointing to various factors that may facilitate and increase the quality of contact during online therapy. Limitations and recommendations for future research, training, and practice are discussed. Keywords online therapy, blended therapy, Gestalt, contact, therapeutic relationship, embodied awareness, qualitative research, IPA, Thematic Analysis
