A wideband triple port hexagonal shaped patch antenna for 5G access points
• A wideband triple port hexagonal-shaped patch antenna with tripolarization is proposed for the fifth-generation access point applications. • The measured impedance bandwidth is 41.7% (3200 MHz to 4900 MHz), and the peak isolation is -32 dB. • The proposed antenna has an envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.01, a diversity gain (DG) of 10 dB, and a total active reflection coefficient (TARC) of -10 dB across the operating band. A wideband triple port hexagonal-shaped patch antenna with tripolarization is presented for the fifth-generation access point applications. The antenna comprises a hexagonal patch printed on the upper substrate and a ground on the lower substrate. Three ports spaced by an equal angular distance excite the hexagonal patch, resulting in three orthogonal radiations. A fan-shaped rectangular slot is etched on the hexagonal patch to enhance the isolation of the antenna elements. The antenna's bandwidth is increased by incorporating three hook-shaped slot structures around each port and three square rings in the ground plane. Further, by using a shorting pin, the impedance matching is improved without affecting the bandwidth. The measured impedance bandwidth is 41.7% (3200 MHz to 4900 MHz), with peak isolation of -32 dB. The proposed antenna has an envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.01, a diversity gain (DG) of 10 dB, and total active reflection coefficient (TARC) of below -10dB across the operating band with channel capacity loss (CCL) of <0.4 bps/Hz.
