Illusions and Forces

In this paper we examine the use of an analogy taken from physics in the introductory text of the Transcendental Dialectic, in the Critique of Pure Reason. It is argued that the analogy has a didactic purpose and allows Kant to introduce new concepts. This use of analogies is called ‘rhetorical’ and is distinguished from the logical and mathematical uses of analogies.

Abstract

In this paper we examine the use of an analogy taken from physics in the introductory text of the Transcendental Dialectic, in the Critique of Pure Reason. It is argued that the analogy has a didactic purpose and allows Kant to introduce new concepts. This use of analogies is called ‘rhetorical’ and is distinguished from the logical and mathematical uses of analogies.
