The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Writing Assessment: Learner Perceptions and System Effectiveness

Writing assessments play a crucial role in educational development, helping learners improve language skills and achieve academic success. Traditional assessment methods, often reliant on human evaluators, can lack consistency, require extensive time, and are limited in scalability. While Artificial intelligence (AI) driven writing tools like Grammarly and Turnitin have addressed aspects of grammar and plagiarism detection, they lack comprehensive feedback that supports holistic writing improvement. This research integrates AI-driven assessment into learner perception analysis to deliver an extensive writing improvement evaluation across various dimensions beyond simple grammar and plagiarism detection considered by previous studies. The study collects data from learners of varying educational levels to assess the tool's perceived effectiveness, clarity of feedback, and its impact on grammar improvement. Findings indicate that regular usage of AI writing tool significantly enhances writing skills, particularly in grammar and feedback clarity. Satisfaction ratings were high, with over 75% of participants reporting favorable perceptions of its accuracy, effectiveness, and fairness. This work demonstrates AI tools potential as a supportive educational tool, offering scalability and consistency in writing assessment, ultimately fostering student engagement and self-directed learning in writing.
