Ethical and Legal Perspectives on Digital Telehealth in Genetic Counseling: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities
Expanding access to genetic services is a pressing challenge, amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital telehealth has emerged as a promising solution, enabling remote delivery of genetic counseling. However, significant barriers remain, including disparities in access due to structural, cultural, and societal factors. This paper explores key policy, ethical, and legal considerations related to the use of digital telehealth in genetic counseling. The authors highlight the potential of telehealth to address workforce shortages and increase patient access, while also noting the importance of preserving the genetic counselor-client relationship and ensuring privacy and security of sensitive genetic information. Policy frameworks and regulations are examined, emphasizing the need for adherence to professional standards and ethical guidelines. Ethical implications, such as the impact on access, informed consent, and quality of care, are also discussed. Looking to the future, the paper underscores the paramount need for comprehensive telehealth policies to support the efficient and effective integration of digital technologies in genetic counseling service delivery. Ultimately, this multifaceted analysis provides valuable insights for policymakers, advocates, and practitioners navigating the evolving landscape of genebased medicine and telehealth.
