A Pattern Reconfigurable H-Slot Dielectric Resonator Antenna for WI-FI Application

Based on an H-shaped slot excitation, a novel pattern reconfigurable dielectric resonator antenna is proposed in this paper. The electric field distribution of the main dielectric radiator can be flexible switched through the control of the PIN diodes across the H-slot. It could realize flexible switch of four directional patterns with <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{Phi} =0 / 90 / 180 / 270 \text{deg}$</tex>. Abstract

It also features a compact size of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.48 \lambda_{0} \times 0.48 \lambda_{0} \times 0.13 \lambda_{0}$</tex>. To verify the working principle of the proposed DRA, it has been fabricated and measured. The measured overlapping impedance bandwidth of the proposed DRA is about <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2.2-2.6 \text{GHz}(16.3 \%)$</tex>, which are wide enough for the WI-FI application (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2.4-2.48 \text{GHz}$</tex>). The simulated peak gain of each state exceeds <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$3.96 / 4.85 \text{dBi}$</tex>, and the radiation efficiency is greater than <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$-1.5 ~\text{dB}(70 \%)$</tex>. The proposed antenna can be well applied for space-limited, complex and intelligent Wi-Fi application.
