Lim Chong Keat and the Young Artists of Penestanan of Ubud, Bali
Abstract: This report examines the impact of Malaysian architect Lim Chong Keat on Penestanan's Young Artists movement in Bali, which emerged under Arie Smit's mentorship in the 1960s. Lim's support was crucial in bringing these artists' vibrant, contemporary interpretations of Balinese life to an international stage. This study, based on interviews with Lim and the artists of Penestanan, along with an analysis of relevant literature and artworks, highlights Lim's motivations, strategies and methods in advancing their global recognition. Findings reveal that Lim's promotional efforts, including exhibitions at the National Museum of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur's National Art Gallery, significantly boosted the artists' visibility, leading to an increase in the number of artists in Penestanan. This research shows how Lim helped connect the Young Artists movement with the global art world, providing useful lessons for supporting artists and encouraging cultural exchange. His influence in both architecture and art led to a major growth in Penestanan's artist community, turning it into a lively centre for creativity.
