Key Considerations during seed production of biofortified crop varieties
Bio-fortification aims to address malnutrition by increasing the levels of essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamin A in various food crops. Biofortified varieties have been developed in different crops, including rice, wheat, maize, and legumes, which shown promising results in improving the nutritional status of populations in developing countries. However, seed production and multiplication of biofortified varieties require specific considerations, such as maintaining genetic purity, ensuring proper pollination, and adopting appropriate agronomic practices to maintain the required nutrient content. Future research objectives should focus on developing more efficient seed production methods and investigating the interactions between soil, weather, and biofortified varieties to ensure their successful adoption and impact on public health.
