A Simulation Study for Optimal Conditions of Single-Mode Polymer Optical Waveguides in Chip-to-Chip Connections
This paper presents an effective method of establishing target design rules to optimize the structure of PWGs (Polymer Optical Waveguides), which are used for chip-to-chip interconnections on the semiconductor package substrates. To identify regions with the single-mode and the MFD (Mode Field Diameter) is around 3.0 µm, we performed numerical simulations of PWGs using a commercial optical simulator, varying the core size and the refractive indices of the core and cladding of the PWG. Furthermore, we limited the SSC (Spot Size Converter) of the PICs (Photonic Integrated Circuits) and study the structure with the minimum coupling loss as the PWG connected to the SSC in detail.
