Pipe Diagnostic Using Innovative Water Flow Log Techniques

Summary Water flow logs (WFL) are typically meant to measure time of flight between a source and detector a fixed distance away expressed as velocity. An innovative concept was developed in-house to interpret the WFL to diagnose pipe damage/annulus shape distortion, by controlling the mud circulation rate and calculating the flow area. Coupled with neutron spectroscopy to quantify extra metal presence in the volume of investigation. This made it possible to retain or reject possible collapse scenarios, which can be extended to other stuck pipe/pack-off incidents.

Abstract

Summary Water flow logs (WFL) are typically meant to measure time of flight between a source and detector a fixed distance away expressed as velocity. An innovative concept was developed in-house to interpret the WFL to diagnose pipe damage/annulus shape distortion, by controlling the mud circulation rate and calculating the flow area. Coupled with neutron spectroscopy to quantify extra metal presence in the volume of investigation. This made it possible to retain or reject possible collapse scenarios, which can be extended to other stuck pipe/pack-off incidents.
