Coupling Geomechanics with Flow Models Using Advanced Hybrid Discretization for Carbon Sequestration Simulation
Summary The paper focuses on the integration of geomechanics and fluid flow models using advanced hybrid discretization techniques to simulate the processes involved in carbon sequestration. The study highlights the challenges posed by the complex geological features of carbonate reservoirs and the importance of understanding geomechanical responses induced by CO2 injection. By utilizing hybrid discretization methods, the model captures both the mechanical deformation and fluid flow dynamics within the reservoir, allowing for a more detailed representation of subsurface processes. The geomechanical component is modeled using the finite element method (FEM), while the fluid flow is simulated through the mimetic finite difference method(MFD). Coupling these two models provides a realistic simulation of the interactions between fluid pressure and rock deformation. The paper also includes a case study where a pressure of −3 × 108Pa was applied to the middle of a mesh, showing how stress propagates in the x, y, and z directions. The findings emphasize the necessity of incorporating geomechanical considerations into CCS projects to optimize storage strategies and mitigate risks associated with reservoir integrity.
