Contextualizing Gasman (1998)

In addition to theoretical and cultural approaches, this article argues that Lynne Ramsay’s short film Gasman (1998) is an excellent text for a film studies course dedicated to formalist analysis. However, the conditions of close formal study can produce notable phenomenological effects among the students that emerge through humour and commentary expressed in the form of popular internet memes.

Abstract

In addition to theoretical and cultural approaches, this article argues that Lynne Ramsay’s short film Gasman (1998) is an excellent text for a film studies course dedicated to formalist analysis. However, the conditions of close formal study can produce notable phenomenological effects among the students that emerge through humour and commentary expressed in the form of popular internet memes.
