Hyper Inflation in South Sudan: Causes, Effects and Remedial Actions

This study aimed to explore the causes, effects, and potential remedial actions to address hyperinflation in South Sudan, a nation experiencing extreme economic instability. Recognizing the critical role of hyperinflation in exacerbating poverty and hindering national development, the study sought to identify the underlying factors contributing to the crisis, assess its socio-economic impacts, and propose viable solutions for stabilizing the economy. By analyzing empirical literature and existing research, the study provided a comprehensive understanding of the hyperinflationary environment in South Sudan and its broader implications for the country's economic recovery. The study employed an empirical literature review methodology, systematically analyzing peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and economic studies published between 2015 and 2025. This approach enabled a thorough examination of the key drivers, effects, and potential solutions to hyperinflation in South Sudan. The sources reviewed covered a wide range of perspectives, including political instability, fiscal mismanagement, overdependence on oil exports, and the impact of the ongoing civil conflict. The synthesis of these findings allowed for identifying key trends and common themes, which informed the formulation of policy recommendations to address the inflationary crisis. The findings revealed that hyperinflation in South Sudan resulted from a combination of political instability, poor fiscal management, and overreliance on oil exports, coupled with the prolonged civil conflict. These factors led to a drastic depreciation of the South Sudanese pound, skyrocketing prices for basic goods, and widespread economic hardship. The effects of hyperinflation were most pronounced in the form of diminished purchasing power, food insecurity, and the deterioration of public services such as healthcare and education. The study proposed a set of remedial actions, including the restoration of central bank independence, the implementation of fiscal reforms, the diversification of the economy, and efforts to promote peace and political stability. It concluded that addressing hyperinflation in South Sudan required a multifaceted approach involving both domestic reforms and international cooperation to lay the foundation for long-term economic recovery and stability.

Recognizing the critical role of hyperinflation in exacerbating poverty and hindering national development, the study sought to identify the underlying factors contributing to the crisis, assess its socio-economic impacts, and propose viable solutions for stabilizing the economy.
