Features of the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the management of natural resources and environmental safety

The article examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the environmental sphere. The author analyzes the definition of AI in accordance with European and Ukrainian legislation, in particular, the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and the Concept of AI Development in Ukraine. The main approaches to AI regulation are outlined, as well as the challenges associated with its implementation in the field of environmental safety. The key areas of AI use in the environmental sphere are considered: environmental monitoring, environmental risk forecasting, automated analysis of environmental legislation and detection of environmental violations. Particular attention is paid to practical examples of the use of AI technologies, in particular, for analyzing satellite images, assessing air and water quality, modeling climate change and environmental disasters. The article discusses in detail the use of AI in the implementation of environmental regulations, including digital investigations of environmental offenses, the formation of an evidence base, and monitoring of environmental legislation. Examples of AI tools, such as Global Forest Watch, Plume Labs, Skylight, Earthrise and others, are provided, which allow to effectively identify violations of environmental legislation and assess their social and environmental consequences. Special attention is paid to data processing tools that allow monitoring environmental changes in real time. The role of AI in military conflicts is also highlighted, including its importance for documenting environmental war crimes, assessing environmental pollution, and demining. AI helps to detect illegal use of natural resources, damage to ecosystems, and collect evidence that can be used in international courts. The article emphasizes the importance of legislative regulation of the use of AI in the field of environmental monitoring, which should ensure the efficient, ethical and safe use of these technologies. The author emphasizes the need to develop clear standards and criteria for certification of environmental AI systems used both at the national and international levels. The article emphasizes the significant prospects of AI in the field of environmental protection and the need to integrate it into legal mechanisms of environmental control.
