Features of information reliability assessment by polygraph method in criminal analysis

Since the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence following a prolonged period of Soviet occupation and up to the present conditions of armed resistance against Russian aggression, our state has been consistently advancing along the path of democratic development and integration into the European and global community. The chosen strategic course toward European integration, along with active support from international partners, has facilitated the implementation of advanced methods, technologies, and standards, significantly enhancing the capacity of Ukraine’s security and defense sector to respond to contemporary challenges and threats. The widespread adoption of polygraph examinations in accordance with international best practices, as well as the integration of criminal analysis into the activities of special services and law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, has enabled an effective response to both internal threats – such as crime, corruption, collaborationism, and treason – and external threats posed by Russian occupation forces. Polygraph examinations and criminal analysis are currently employed separately by units within Ukraine’s security and defense sector, although their combination could provide a synergistic effect and complement each other. In our study, we examined the feasibility of using the polygraph as a method of criminal analysis to assess the reliability and credibility of information. We investigated the effectiveness of internationally recognized polygraph examination methods, evaluating their reliability and accuracy in determining the trustworthiness of information. The role and significance of credibility assessment within criminal analysis using the polygraph method were analyzed. The study substantiates the rationale for integrating the polygraph method into the suite of analytical tools employed in criminal analysis to enhance the effectiveness of decision-making processes. It is concluded that the polygraph-based method of criminal analysis can be effectively used to assess the reliability and credibility of information.
