Overall Radition Pattern Correction and Time Complexity Constraints in Antenna Array Failures
One of the most important objectives in electronically scanned arrays is to maintain a high-gain main beam as the side lobe levels (SLLs) are decreased. These arrays have a probability of element or transmitter/receiver module failure. The SLL rises, the first null beamwidth (FNBW) and half-power beamwidth (HPBW) widen, and the peak gain decreases when these elements fail. In this work, the optimal convex (CVX) and suboptimal particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms are investigated for element failure problems in small and medium-sized linear arrays. Both the algorithms outperform in terms of recovering gain, HPBW, FNBW, and SLL in antenna array elements failure. The study concludes promising results of recovering these array parameters using the optimal CVX algorithm for applications, where time complexity constraint is required. The suboptimal PSO is capable to achieve the array key parameters in the presence of elements failure when overall radiation pattern recovery is the main concern. The presented study has two investigations; (i) the optimal CVX is used to recover SLL, HPBW, FNBW and peak gain for three cases of double element failure; (ii) comparison of time complexity and overall radiation pattern recovery of the optimal CVX with the PSO for 1×8, 1×16, 1×32 and 1×64 linear arrays.
