Portable Electrical Impedance Tomography for Enhanced Thorax Monitoring and Pulmonary Diagnosis

Pulmonary diseases are among the leading causes of mortality rate worldwide. This paper discusses the use of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) in monitoring thorax models. The study involved using a low cost and portable existing EIT system to evaluate the performance of the system through image reconstruction. Different experiments involving single objects placed on the boundary, in the center, and with contrasting electrical properties were performed. The results showed that the system was able to successfully detect and localize objects by their electrical impedance. The EIT system was then used to test the agar-based thorax phantom. First, the capability of the system to accurately detect and localize the lung region was established by testing only the lung model. Furthermore, when the thorax model, including both the heart and lung models was tested, the EIT system clearly highlighted the heart and lungs. These findings indicate that the EIT system has potential to significantly advance the diagnosis of thoracic conditions.
